Title:Extension and Evaluation of a Rhythmic Analysis System
Date: 1996
Abstract:Procedures for rhythmic analysis are extended in a system deriving harmonic accompaniment to musical input in notional real time. A framework for comparative evaluation of rhythm perception is devised. A theory of perceptual pulse salience, in which rhythms are felt most prominently as they tend towards a period of around 6-700 milliseconds (moderate tempo), is modelled. The system's rhythmic analysis is compared directly against human performance. The inclusion of a tempo dependence factor improves the regularity of beat perception, but tempo identification itself is not necessarily enhanced.
