Abstract:Recent estimates indicate that there are 300-500 million clinical cases of malaria each year, with more than 90 percent of the cases occurring in tropical Africa. There are an estimated 1.4 - 2.6 million deaths worldwide, with 90 percent of deaths occurring in Africa alone. One anti-malarial strategy which combines planning with techniques for combating malaria is stratification. Due to difficulties in training students in the use of this strategy, the WHO would desire an ITS for this purpose. The system represents the knowledge of an expert in stratification, and seeks to confer this knowledge upon the student. The system combines an expert system, multiple choice questionnaires, and case-based teaching/retrieval approaches to effect this transfer of expert knowledge to the student. The tutoring approach used is a combination of cognitive apprenticeship, inquiry teaching and stepwise refinement. A Multiple Choice Questionnaire is used to transfer basic knowledge. The Cognitive Apprenticeship approach is used in the Case-Based Teaching component, where the hierarchical nature of stratification is taught via 'Real World' problems. A student model is used to ensure that essential issues are understood before more complex issues are introduced, and to ensure that questions are of an appropriate level of difficulty based upon previous performance. Finally, an evaluation procedure is designed and implemented to ascertain how effective the multiple choice questionnaire and the case-based learning approach are in teaching the required skills. The results obtained indicate that the ITS is effective at teaching Stratification.
