Abstract:This thesis describes the application of Fusim, a fuzzy qualitative simulation system to the detection of inverse reactions in a physical system, with particular reference to models of reactions in chemical stir tanks. It is found that a strict constraint-based approach is impractical and an alternative method for representing the system model is used. With this modification Fusim is able to generate the possible system behaviours from a model of the system given as a set of equations. These simulations are then used for detection of possible inverse responses in the system. Fusim has advantages over other QR systems because it is able to find the numerical ranges that certain parameters should be within for a physical system to display inverse behaviour.
