Abstract:This dissertation describes an attempt to apply a behaviour-based robotics design methodology, subsumption architecture, to a software project which emulates a human competence. The project produces a chord structure for a song when presented with its melody as audio input, with the goal of providing real time accompaniment without the benefit of a score. the implications of behaviour-based distribution intelligence paradigms for both the engineering and the explanatory aspects of artificial intelligence are discussed.
