Abstract:An investigation into the behaviour of "then" as a temporal anaphor suggests the need to distinguish between two uses of "then" - these being: 1. As a temporal anaphor referring back to a previously established explicit temporal referent (ETR). 2. As a means of expressing temporal relations between states or events (such as cotemporality, backgrounding or updating) - where no ETR is required.
