Abstract:In this paper we advance a conjecture that, for certain classes of problem, a hybrid solution employing a suitable mixture of symbolic reasoning and non-symbolic behaviour is most efficient both in terms of design effort and in terms of effective performance. This is motivated by the success of the SOMASS robotic assembly system built at Edinburgh. The rest of the paper concentrates on efforts in progress to test this conjecture in a real-time context, describing a (partially complete) control system for several independent radio-controlled model cars and drawing some tentative conclusions from the current state of that system. The principal (tentative) conclusion is that, for this problem at least, the conjecture is supported.
