| Abstract: | The paper provides a discussion of the non-smooth concept membership function and its relationship to constructive induction. A way of measuring the smoothness of concept membership functions is introduced and used to derive nominal smoothness values for the membership functions represented by a number of well known training sets. A special case of non-smoothness is isolated and analysed, and its relationship to the problem of representation modification is considered. |
