| Abstract: | This thesis describes the design and implementation of a form-based user-interaction model capable of improving the use of graphically captured clinical protocols by directing a clinician's attention to all and only the information that needs to be entered about his or her patient. The model, developed using the Java Expert System Shell (JESS) and Java program language, is able to recommend and justify ``best practice'' medical procedures by redesigning the graphical form-based interface that implements the model and allowing access to the justifications that underlies decision nodes through the World Wide Web (WWW). Through its emphasis on an efficient human computer interaction, the interface presents a simple and consistent context to the users and hence helps to maintain patient safety and ensures ease of use.
