Abstract:There is a dearth of research into the application of Artificial Intelligence for the instruction of psychomotor skills. This thesis aims to show that such research is both worthwhile and feasible for implementation, through the design and development of an intelligent tutor for playing the drums. By formalising a theoretical system, a framework is constructed within which is identified the knowledge necessary to teach a psychomotor skill (in this case, the drums), and how that knowledge should be delivered to the student. This goal is achieved by the use of modular design to allow flexibility, the use of abstrage knowledge representation (in particular, by employing the CHARM system [Wiggins et al. 89, 91, Smaill et al. 93]) and the provision of a multimedia interface for interactions withh the prospective student. by doing so, the use of artifically intelligent tutoring systems can be extended to a new domain, and in this process, new research into the acquisition of psychomotor skills may be introduced.
