Abstract:We humans make extensive use of causal reasoning. Especially when trying to explain to each other how certain thinks work, this is done by expressing cause & effect relationships. This work tries to automatically generate causal relations from a functional description of physical systems in order to build explanations about the functioning of the systems. The causal ordering mechanism proposed by [Iwasaki & Simon 94] has been investigated and implemented. The original algorithm has been extended, so it now can deal with a wider range of feedback loops. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation has been undertaken to see how the generated causal graphs can be used for fault identification in Model Based Diagnosis. The results so far disclosed that causal graphs are not selective enough to perform this task.
