| Abstract: | The hippocampus plays an essential role in memory and possibly spatial computations. Removal or damage results in an inability to create new memories and to perform spatial tasks properly. This project studies one method of modelling a section of the rat hippocampus (region CA1), focusing upon elements which control dynamics. A major aspect of dynamics studies will be the so-called theta rhythm. I have created a realistic cell model, which is replicated to produce a network of 135 cells. Important aspects of the model, especially the variety of inhibitory cells and septal inputs, have not been modelled in this detail before. The role of these cells and inputs in controlling network dynamics are considered, with reference to how the hippocampus may operate in vivo. |
