Abstract:Lerdahl and Jackendoff [Lerdahl and Jackendoff 83] propose a theory of music which attempts to model the unconscious organisation a listener infers in perception of music. The theory is made up of a set of grammar rules. This project implements, as a computer program, a section of these rules - namely the rules making up the grouping component of the theory. The final system developed is an interactive system allowing a user to build a group structure for a piece of music based on Lerdahl and Jackendoff's rules. The system was tested by two willing volunteers and proved a useful tool both for grouping analysis of music and for investigation of the application of Lerdahl and Jackendoff's rules.
