Abstract: | Foraging for food by worker ants is the most commonly observed form of ant behaviour. foraging workers collect food and return it to the nest where it is consumed by all members of the colony. In many ant species foraging behaviour is highly co-ordinated and co-operative. Such behaviour is nearly always mediated by pheromone communication. Formica aquilonia appears to be unique amongst most ants in its neglect of pheromonal trails as an aid to foraging and its adoption of alternative navigational cues. this project firstly presents a plausible navigational model for F. aquilonia, and secondly, a computational implementation of this model. The accuracy of the model will be tested by comparing the observed behaviour of the simulated foragers and the observed behaviour of Formica aquilonia in the laboratory.
