Abstract:The authoring and consultation of building regulations poses the problem of dealing with semi-formalized, contradictory and incomplete knowledge. Checking the compliance of a building requires experience in the interpretation of the regulations. In practice, previous interpretations in specific contexts are used to find how compliance might be achieved for the case at hand. This thesis describes a case based reasoning system which includes the notion of implied similarity as well as structural mapping for the identification and retrieval of potentially applicable provisions. some criteria are defined to measure the relevancy of matches. The source of legal knowledge includes case histories besides standard building regulations so as to provide alternative interpretations of legal rules.
