Abstract:IDAS is a documentation system which generates natural language explanations of complex equipment from a KL-ONE type knowledge base (KB). The aim of this project was to produce a tool to allow domain experts of create KB representations for answering questions involving actions. This report gives a brief overview of IDAL and Il - its knowledge representation system - followed by a detailed description of the tool developed. The tool uses a hybrid interface based around a keyword parser and a graphic browser. Single line action decompositions are defined using quasi-natural English text, mouse-selected values or a mixture of both. The report ends with a discussion of the use of the tool in a complete IDAS authoring system, an evaluation of the success of the approach taken, and proposals for extensions and improvements.
