Title:A System for the Generation of Instrumental Solos in Jazz
Date:Sep 1997
Abstract:This thesis describes a system for generating instrumental solos over an input chord progression in the style of jazz. A symbolic, problem-dependent genetic algorithm was used to search through the space of possible solutions. A symbolic, as opposed to inary, approach was chosen becauise it allowed structures to be represented in a way that was easy to process and interpret. Problem-dependent genetic operators were used in order to deal efficiently with the problem. The algorithmic fitness function as well as the "clever" genetic operators direct the search to more promising musical paths.
