Continuous and Discrete Agent Models

David Roberston

Large agent systems can be viewed at different levels of abstraction. At a high level, they may be modelled as if they were systems of continuous change. At the individual agent level, they may be modelled by discrete events such as message passing. I shall look at the way in which continuous models can be used to investigate behaviours which we then attempt to relate to discrete-event models of individual agent interactions. The example I use is of a distribution ring.
