A recent edition of IEEE Expert is devoted to "Intelligent Agents", describing the "first wave" of commercial systems and discussing some of the engineering principles for such systems. But in which ways are these systems novel ? Do they raise new issues for AI academics or are they just a rehash of various old ideas which have come of age ? We shall be discussing the articles in the IEEE issue and arguing about what this new fashion means for the engineering side of AI.
