The Social Aid for Interactive Development (SAID) project aims to provide, among other things, transparent access to information from the web using next generation Digital TV set top boxes (STBs). As the targeted user group will be elderly and disabled persons, the decision has been made that these users should not be aware that they are in fact surfing the web. This presents the designer of such a system with a number of problems. How do you construct a retrieval system without queries from a user? How do you present information without betraying its web-influenced origins using a limited STB interface? I will discuss these problems and present our preliminary proposals.
