Interaural Intensity Differences (IID)

Object localisation in 3D is made possible by combining the IID's at different frequencies ranging from 30 to 90 kHz. The remaining ambiguities, due to the symmetry of the IID patterns, are removed by flapping the ears.

Conclusion:
  • An isolated reflector, placed at azimuth=4 degr and elevation=-6 degr, can be reliably localised: it corresponds with the cell with maximum activation.
  • We are currently investigating how robust this mechanism is when confronted with multiple reflectors.
