Abstract:

I shall review how the study of the human brain, in particular the hippocampus and the cerebellum, might impact on the design of artificial systems, from the point of view of a computational neuroscientist. I will highlight the similarities and differences (mainly the differences) between the two types of system; such as, the underlying design principles, the nature of the building blocks and their interrelations; the way in which the systems are constructed, and the use to which the different types of system are put. The converse point of view is to consider how artificial system design aids our understanding of the nervous system and I shall consider this point briefly.
