News (2003)Ronan Daly joined the AQR on 1st October, as a PhD student. Dr Andrew Tuson, a Senior Lecturer at City University, joined the AQR on 22nd September, as a visiting research fellow for one year. An EPSRC grant (01/02/04-31/01/06) has been awarded to support research on "Model-Based Investigation of Crime Scenarios". (Investigators: Qiang Shen, Colin Aitken and Burkhard Schafer; Research Fellow: Jeroen Keppens) The New Scientist published an article on 5 July 2003 about the work that Jeroen Keppens presented at the 9th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law. Javier Gomez-Marin-Blazquez successfully defended his thesis, entitled "From Approximative to Descriptive Fuzzy Models" on 18th March 2003, and graduated on 9 July 2003. (Supervisors: Qiang Shen, Peter Ross and Antonio F. Gomez Skarmeta) Elias Biris successfully defended his thesis, entitled "Approximate Model Composition for Explanation Generation" on 20th January 2003, and graduated on 9 July 2003. (Supervisors: Qiang Shen and Chris Mellish) Ian Miguel's PhD thesis, entitled "Dynamic Flexible Constraint Satisfaction and its Application to AI Planning" won a BCS/CHPC 2002 Distinguished Dissertations Award, one of the 33 such best UK theses in all areas relevant to computing since this prestigious award scheme was established in 1990.
