Daly</a> joined the AQR on 1st October, as a PhD student.

<p> Dr <a href="http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/people/staff/Andrew_Tuson.html">Andrew Tuson</a>, a Senior Lecturer at City
University, joined the AQR on 22nd September, as a visiting research
fellow for one year.

<p> An <a href="http://www.epsrc.ac.uk">EPSRC</a> grant
(01/02/04-31/01/06) has been awarded to support research on
"Model-Based Investigation of Crime Scenarios"</A>.  (Investigators:
Qiang Shen, Colin Aitken and Burkhard Schafer; Research Fellow: Jeroen
Keppens)

<p> The <A
HREF="http://www.newscientist.com/">New Scientist</A> published an <A
      HREF="newscientist-2003-07-05.jpg">article</A> on 5 July 2003 about the
work that <A
HREF="http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/people/staff/Jeroen_Keppens.html">Jeroen
Keppens</A> presented at the <A
HREF="http://www.cfslr.ed.ac.uk/icail03/">9th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law</A>.

<p> <A
HREF="http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/people/students/Javier_Gomez-Marin-Blazquez.html">Javier
Gomez-Marin-Blazquez</A> successfully defended his thesis, entitled
"From Approximative to Descriptive Fuzzy Models" on 18th March 2003,
and graduated on 9 July 2003. (Supervisors: Qiang Shen,
Peter Ross and Antonio F. Gomez Skarmeta)

<p> <A
HREF="http://www.informatics.ed.ac.uk/people/students/Elias_Biris.html">Elias
Biris</A> successfully defended his thesis, entitled "Approximate
Model Composition for Explanation Generation" on 20th January 2003,
and graduated on 9 July 2003. (Supervisors: Qiang Shen and
Chris Mellish)

<p><A HREF="http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/ianm/">Ian Miguel's</A> PhD
thesis, entitled "Dynamic Flexible Constraint Satisfaction and its
Application to AI Planning" won a BCS/CHPC 2002 <A
HREF="http://www.cphc.ac.uk/dissertations.html">Distinguished
Dissertations Award</A>, one of the 33 such best UK theses in all
areas relevant to computing since this prestigious award scheme was
established in 1990. (Supervisors: Qiang Shen and Peter Jarvis)
