Abstract: | On January 1st 1993 a new UK law slipped onto the statute books, with remarkably little public comment. Since this law could have a significant impact on the market for computer products in the UK, it was especially surprising that there was little debate about it in the computing community. The new law is called "The Copyright (Computer Programs) Regulations 1992". To understand this law, and the changes to software copyright that it will bring, it is necessary to understand some of the events which led up to its introduction.
