Abstract: | This paper presents an argument against the partitioning of design into sub-problems: analysis/synthesis, creative/routine, cost/structural/aesthetic. It accepts that in practice, such a partitioning of design is inevitable. Thus, the argument hinges on the extent to which Expert Systems should, and do, prescribe the form of partitioning. The paper explains how a more distributed interpretation of dependency can avoid this undesirable, and largely implicit prescription. |
