Abstract:HERMAN is a project to develop a system capable of generating music at varying levels of tension in real time. It is designed to run in parallel with Judy Robertson's PhD system, Ghostwriter, providing the background music to a 3D haunted house environment. Here, primary school children will operate to produce plays, furthering both their playwriting, and co-operative skills.HERMAN involved research into both musical literature, and intensive study of a number of genres of motion pictures, facilitating derivation of a set of "rules for creating musical tension".HERMAN was a joint project between the author, and Thomas Stapleford. It therefore involved not only the problems of implementing a complex system, but also those of co-operating in doing so.
