Abstract:Music is the activity observed only in humans, since the creation of music requires not only intelligence, but also creativity. This makes it a very interesting AI research topic. this project focuses on a four-voice harmonisation problem which is a subset in the algorithmic composition area. The state space of the four-voice harmonisation problem is huge. This project aims to study the feasibility of genetic algorithms as applied to the harmonisation task. Normally, knowledge could be applied into three main areas in the implementation of genetic algorithms i.e. chromosome representations, reproduction operators and a fitness function. This project uses a direct representation scheme, problem specific reproduction operators and uses a theoretical knowledge to construct the fitness function. In this paper, the aim will be the investigation of genetic algorithms applications in the four-voice harmonisation domain.
