Abstract:Navigation and map building is one of the most important abilities for intelligent beings, when surviving in their natural environment. Attempts to reproduce this ability artificially have proven to be very much harder than originally anticipated and many methods have been explored. This project attempts to take a reactive approach to solving this problem. It looks at the development of reflexive controllers, developed by evolutionary techniques, as a first step. Then it focuses on the use of these controllers to generate information about its environment, by assessing the controller's performance with the data from the fitness functions, used to generate the controller components. Using the information generated, it then attempts to generate a map representation of the environment, which is then used for navigation.
