Abstract:This project investigates the plausibility of designing receivers for a binaural echolocation system by means of a Genetic Algorithm. It exploits the proven biological principle of "decorating" a simple transducer surface with external pinnae, like acoustical baffles, so as to achieve particular desirable directionality characteristics. The pinnae are composed of a series of simple flat reflectors which focus acoustic energy from particular regions of the sound field onto the transducer surface. They can be constructed in hardware and mounted on an existing navigating robot.
