Abstract:Fatalities amongst patients admitted to hospital for severe head injuries are not always due to the head injury itself. There are other conditions which arise, termed secondary insults, which can and often do lead to fatality. By intensively monitoring patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) clinicians can stop secondary insults from becoming fatal and in some cases avoid them altogether. One of the most important pieces of data, termed a "channel" that can be monitored is Intracranial Pressure (ICP). All techniques for monitoring ICP, however, are invasive and require probes to be placed inside the skull. By using neural network technology and other channel data besides ICP one can produce a function which approximates ICP while not having to resort to dangerous monitoring techniques.
