| Abstract: | This report details the design and implementation of a simulated agent based system for resource discovery in a distributed information system, and the subsequent investigation into the factors which affect its scalability and effectiveness. the foremost of these factors is the degree of distribution (particularly of metaknowledge) within the system and its effects on query recall, system load and system robustness. The system is based on Yoav Shoham's Agent Oriented Programming paradigm and Agent-0 language. This report also describes the reworking of an existing Agent-0 implementation to make it suitable for this problem domain. The results of this investigation suggest that the distribution of meta-knowledge within the system is beneficial only in terms of system robustness, and has a detrimental effect on other aspects of system performance. |
