Abstract:The aim of this project was to produce natural language advice for Bridge declarer play. It is an extension to the FINESSE system developed by Ian Frank for his thesis [Frank96], in which proof-planning techniques are used to generate plans of tactics. Bridge is a game with incomplete information. At any particular stage of the game, it is not possible to see all the remaining cards, and it is this uncertainty in which certain cards lie that gives rise to the numerous tactics available to the player. Given a certain card combination, FINESSE produces a plan which is in the form of a minimax tree. This was analysed to give a description of what line of play would have the greatest chance of success, under what circumstances it would succeed, and how it compared with its rivals. The main goal of the project was to generate such an explanation that was both readable and useful, and improved on that of the original. The resulting mechanism succeeded in producing both textual and tabular information for a wide variety of game situations.
