Abstract:Plan-based Natural Language Generation systems that use discourse relations can produce far too many alternative texts. In fact, lack of constraints on discourse planning apart from constraints made by discourse relations may significantly decrease discourse quality compared with systems that have constraints on focus moves. Currently, there are two seemingly incompatible approaches to discourse planning. They are based on discourse relations and focus moves. I implemented a system that used rhetorical relations and explores the use of focus moves to improve the organization of monologue texts, starting from situations and relations between them, in the domain of stock market news.
