Abstract:The Institute for Applied Language Studies accommodates most of its international students of "English as a Foreign Language" in flats. The aim is to ensure harmony within each flat, and maximise the amount of English spoken. The first means minimising political, age- and smoking-based strife; the second, maximising the number of representatives of different languages. Focussing more on the application than the abstract, we designed and prototyped a quasiqualitative interactive Rule-Based System to assist with allocating students to flats. Lacking the ability to improve allocations once they are made, the system is flawed. However, the representational format employed may have more general applications.
