Abstract: | This project builds on top of an existing Design Support System for chemical processes (Knowledge-Based Design System or KBDS) and aims in the first instance to obtain a low-level (or core-level) representation for describing the function of the units in a given chemical process flowsheet and in the second instance to produce a higher level abstraction of the combined functions of these units as sub-systems in the overall plant. the thesis outline the rationale, design, implementation, use and contribution of such a functional representation in chemical process design and its viability as an auxiliary design support strategy for the chemical process industry.
