Abstract:Free word order languages present a challenging problem for natural language parsing. Such languages, including German, Persian and Warlpiri, exhibit large variation in their constituent order. To capture these free word order phenomena in Persian, we have developed a system which incorporates the ideas of constraint based parsing. We have compared existing approaches and construct a grammar/parsing framework which is a hybrid of existing techniques. Within this framework we have developed a grammar which captures the free word order phenomena for a substantial fragment of Persian. The overall system can parse a large range of Persian sentences, including examples with varied constituent order and complex fronting in them. The work reported here suggests a new basis for building more general and principle based parsers.
