Abstract: | This project discusses the possibilities of using a cheap reprogrammable robot in a secondary school, as a means of introducing students to the related areas of computer control and the behaviour of autonomous agents in a complex world. It is proposed that students would find such work rewarding, and an understanding of the use of computers for control would be a valuable addition to their education. It describes an implementation of a computational engine for such a robot, or for general control applications. it also describes a programming language, suitable for use with students, that was developed to program the computational engine. it is demonstrated that such a mobile robot system could be built for under 150 pounds sterling, assuming that the user already had access to a PC computer. Though lack of time prevented a full evaluation of the finished system, it is argued that there is no reason be believe that such a system could not provide a valued addition to a school curriculum.
