Abstract:The encoding scheme in a connectionist network has a great effect on the overall performance of the network, despite the fact that there are a number of different architectures and learning algorithms. In this project different encoding schemes for mapping between orthography (input units) and phonology output units) are suggested. A classification of different encoding schemes in general is also suggested to assist in describing the schemes in a general framework. In this project software which creates these different encoding schemes has been developed. The Xerion neural network simulator is used to simulate these encoding schemes. The evaluation of each scheme and the results of training the network in all the different combinations of schemes are presented.
