Abstract: | This MSc thesis describes, analyses, designs and implements an Automated MSc Advisor system for the Department of Artificial Intelligence at The University of Edinburgh. This is a Knowledge Based System (KBS) which is going to be usable by next year's MSc students and is intended to replace "part" of the work of the director of studies. The main aim of the system is to advise MSc students to choose their theme and modules. In this project a Knowledge Maintenance Tool is also implemented which is used to keep the main system up to date without too much trouble. I developed the system using KADS methodology. This methodology started as an ESPRIT project and was originally intended to support Knowledge acquisition and analysis in the KBS development but later it focused on the design and implementation phases. It is a very useful methodology because the analysis is implementation independent and it makes use of the interpretation models. An elicitation process based on KADS, which used a kind of focused interviews, was carried out. Finally, I implemented the system using the clips 5.0 tool with a forward chaining rule based system.
