Abstract:This thesis presents a location recognition system implemented on a mobile robot. The system utilises ideas from Marr and Hildreth's theory of low-level vision [Marr & Hildreth 80] to construct self-organising feature maps using Kohonen's algorithm. These maps are then employed to recognise a previously memorised location within an enclosed area. The work is based on previous work done at the University of Edinburgh in the "Really Useful Robots" project [Nehmzow et al 90].
