Abstract:This paper presents a system for temporal ordering of events within narrative discourse. The system takes natural language input and processes it through syntactic, semantic and knowledge base modules creating structures describing each event and a set of time relation statements which define the time ordering of the events. Each module is sectioned into smaller modules which contain information to resolve one part of the whole function of the module. The phenomena dealt with by the system are; temporal conjunctions, tense, temporal reference to other events, temporal adverbials, explicit time information, embedded discourse, world knowledge and narration. The main aim of this system is to create a modular framework for the resolution of temporal ordering where modules can be replaced or added to improve on this resolution.
