Abstract:SPL is a notation for specifying plans for the production of sentences. An optimiser was produced which takes an SPL text specification and reformulates it into a form that will yield an improved text. The motivation for the research was that the conventional multi-stage text generation paradigm is ill-suited for detecting optimisations that may be made to improve the final output. Thus the SPL optimiser is proposed as an extra stage that will lie between the Sentence Planning and surface realisation stages in a text generation system. The domain for the research was the Intelligent Documentation and Advisory System (IDAS) part of which is being developed at Edinburgh University.
