Abstract
The question is examined of how pictures are to be individuated from other
kinds of respresentations. This is discussed in relation to the classic
treatment by Goodman, and a further development by Schier. Neither of
these is found satisfactory. It is argued that the issue should be seen as
interest-relative, and that in formal terms a version of a theory based on
structure mapping is the most promising candidate.
