Halogen Lamps

Common uses and advantages

Halogen lamps provide a very bright point source in a small package and provide excellent color rendition. The halogen technology is commonly used in projector lamps and vehicle headlamps.

Short Halogen Filament Small halogen lamps are now also used inside Quartz Halogen Lamp reflector lamps and some "incandescent-sized" lamps to make a lamp which is slightly more efficient than incandescents but is no larger.

Long Halogen Filament Tubular halogen lamps are used in trough-shaped reflectors for outdoor spotlights.

Other options to consider

Halogens are often considered to be the replacements for incandescents so it is not common to consider replacing halogens with something else.

The features of halogen lamps are hard to find in other lamps. In some applications it may be possible to replace halogens with metal halide or color-corrected high pressure sodium lamps. Since these suggested replacements are electric discharge lamps it would be necessary to provide a ballast. In general this will mean replacing the luminaire as well.
